Residents are invited to attend an engaging evening of local history on Thursday, April 23 at 7:30 PM at the Skippack Township Building (4089 Heckler Road, Skippack, PA 19426).
The program, titled “Effective Public History: Opportunities for Connecting Local History to America’s 250th,” will be presented by Dr. David Young, Executive Director of the Historical Society of Montgomery County.
Dr. Young is an accomplished historian and author of The Battles of Germantown: Effective Public History in America (Temple University Press, 2019), which received the 2020 Klein Prize from the Pennsylvania Historical Association for its contribution to Pennsylvania history. His work focuses on making history meaningful and accessible to the public—an especially timely topic as communities prepare to commemorate the nation’s 250th anniversary.
With decades of experience leading prominent historical organizations, Dr. Young has held leadership roles with the Salem County Historical Society, Cliveden of the National Trust, and the Delaware Historical Society. He also served as the founding director of the Johnson House Historic Site, a National Historic Landmark associated with the Underground Railroad in Germantown.
A native of Chicago and a longtime Germantown resident, Dr. Young holds a BA from Northwestern University and an MA and PhD in History from The Ohio State University. A Fulbright Scholar, he has taught at several regional institutions, including the Graduate Program in Historic Preservation at the University of Pennsylvania.
Dr. Young remains active in the field and currently serves on the Montgomery County 250 Commission.
This event, hosted by the Skippack Historical Society, offers a valuable opportunity for residents to explore how local history connects to the broader American story and to learn how communities can participate in the upcoming semi quincentennial.
